One of the first signs of spring in my pollinator garden is the return of bees.Long before many flowers begin blooming, small native bees appear on warm afternoons searching for nectar. These early pollinators depend on the first available flowers of the season.
Cities and neighborhoods can support many bee species when flowering plants are present. Even small gardens contribute to the larger network of pollinator habitat across a landscape.
Watching the first bees return always reminds me how important small gardens can be. Every flower planted in a yard or garden becomes part of a much larger ecosystem. Those early spring visits also mark the beginning of a new growing season.
