A light snowfall can completely change the look of my garden. Snow settles along the tops of grasses and dried stems, highlighting the shapes of the plants beneath it. The garden becomes quieter, yet still full of structure and subtle beauty. Many prairie plants remain standing through winter, providing shelter for insects and seeds for birds.
Even beneath the snow, prairie roots remain alive in the soil, waiting for warmer temperatures to return. Winter reveals a different side of the prairie landscape. These quiet scenes often inspire calm color palettes and simple natural patterns in handmade work. My prairie garden may appear asleep, yet the cycle of growth is already preparing for spring.
