Pollinator Corridors: How Connected Habitats Help Bees, Butterflies, and Wildlife Thrive

One of the most fascinating things about pollinators is how far they travel. When I watch bees and butterflies moving through my pollinator garden here in Lincoln, Nebraska, it can be tempting to imagine that the garden is their entire world. In reality, most pollinators move between many different habitats throughout their lives.

A bee may visit dozens of flowers across several gardens in a single day. Butterflies drift across parks, prairies, and backyard plantings while searching for nectar and host plants. These movements connect landscapes in ways that are not always obvious.

The spaces pollinators travel through include gardens, prairie restorations, roadside plantings, and natural areas. Together they form what scientists call pollinator corridors. These connected habitats allow pollinators to move safely across landscapes while finding food, shelter, and places to reproduce.

What Pollinator Corridors Are

A pollinator corridor is a network of habitats located close enough together that pollinators can travel between them. In natural prairie ecosystems, large stretches of grassland once provided continuous habitat for pollinators across the Great Plains. Flowers bloomed across the landscape and insects could move freely between them.

Today many of those habitats have been fragmented by agriculture, roads, and development. Instead of one continuous prairie, pollinators encounter smaller patches of habitat separated by long distances. Pollinator corridors help reconnect these pieces. When gardens, prairie plantings, and restored habitats exist within reach of one another, pollinators can move across the landscape while continuing to find nectar and host plants along the way.

Migration and Pollinator Movement

Some pollinators travel surprisingly long distances. Monarch butterflies are perhaps the most famous example. Each year monarchs migrate thousands of miles between breeding areas in North America and overwintering sites in Mexico. Along the way they depend on patches of milkweed and nectar flowers to survive the journey.

Even smaller pollinators move regularly between habitats. Bees may travel hundreds of yards or more from their nesting sites while searching for flowers. During the course of a single day they may visit many different gardens and natural plantings.

Watching bees cross my own garden makes it clear that the flowers here represent only one stop along their route. The surrounding landscape plays an important role in supporting these pollinators as well.

Urban Gardens as Habitat Bridges

Cities might not seem like natural places for pollinators, yet urban areas can provide valuable habitat. Across Lincoln, native plant gardens appear in front yards, along sidewalks, and in neighborhood green spaces. Parks and prairie restoration areas also provide important pollinator habitat. Each of these spaces acts as a small stepping stone within the larger landscape. My own pollinator garden is one example of this type of habitat. While it supports many pollinators on its own, it also forms part of a broader network of gardens and natural areas across the city.

Bees and butterflies move between these spaces while searching for nectar. As they travel, they gradually link together many different habitats. When enough gardens include native plants and pollinator-friendly flowers, an entire neighborhood can become part of a functioning pollinator corridor.

Prairie Corridors and Conservation

Beyond backyard gardens, conservation efforts are also helping restore pollinator corridors across Nebraska. Prairie restoration projects, native plantings along trails, and conservation areas all contribute to rebuilding habitat for pollinators. These landscapes provide nectar sources and host plants that support a wide range of insects and wildlife.

Even small restoration areas can play an important role when they connect with nearby habitats. Together these spaces begin to recreate pieces of the prairie ecosystem that once stretched across the Great Plains. Pollinators moving through these corridors help maintain plant reproduction, support biodiversity, and strengthen the resilience of prairie landscapes.
