Monarch butterflies are among the most recognizable insects in North America. Their orange wings and black markings appear across gardens, prairies, and open landscapes during the warmer months of the year. I notice them often in my garden near the University of Nebraska–Lincoln East Campus. On warm summer days, monarchs drift slowly from flower to flower, sometimes pausing on milkweed blooms or coneflowers before continuing across the garden.
Behind that familiar sight lies one of the most remarkable migrations in the natural world. Monarch butterflies travel thousands of miles across North America as part of an annual cycle connecting Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Milkweed plants play a central role in that journey.
Monarch butterflies rely on milkweed for reproduction and survival. Without milkweed growing across the landscape, monarch populations cannot complete their life cycle. When we plant milkweed in our gardens, we help restore pieces of the habitat these butterflies depend on.
Prairie landscapes once contained vast fields of milkweed and other wildflowers that supported monarchs during migration. Much of that habitat has disappeared over time. Today, gardens like my garden and other prairie plantings help rebuild small pieces of the ecosystem monarchs need.
Monarch Migration
Monarch butterflies complete one of the longest insect migrations on Earth. Each year monarchs travel across North America following seasonal changes in temperature and plant growth. During late summer and early fall, monarchs begin migrating south toward overwintering forests in central Mexico. Some butterflies travel as far as 3,000 miles during this journey.
When I watch monarchs passing through my garden during late summer, it is remarkable to imagine that some of those butterflies may be beginning a migration that will eventually carry them across an entire continent.
The migration happens across several generations of monarch butterflies. Spring monarchs begin the journey north after wintering in Mexico. These butterflies lay eggs on milkweed plants in the southern United States. Their offspring continue traveling northward as milkweed emerges across the landscape. By summer, monarch populations reach the northern United States and Canada. Late-season monarchs then begin the long journey south again.
Migration depends on a network of habitats across the continent. Monarchs need nectar-producing flowers for energy and milkweed plants for reproduction. When milkweed disappears from farmland and developed areas, monarchs lose many of the places they need to raise the next generation.
The Milkweed Lifecycle and Monarch Caterpillars
Milkweed plants form the foundation of the monarch butterfly lifecycle. Female monarch butterflies lay their eggs directly on milkweed leaves. Once the eggs hatch, the tiny caterpillars feed exclusively on milkweed foliage.
I regularly check the milkweed plants growing in my garden during the summer months. Finding a monarch egg or a tiny striped caterpillar on a leaf always feels like discovering a small piece of the migration story happening right outside my door. Milkweed provides both food and protection.
The leaves contain natural chemicals called cardenolides. Monarch caterpillars absorb these compounds while feeding, which makes both the caterpillars and adult butterflies toxic to many predators.
The monarch lifecycle follows several stages:
- Egg laid on a milkweed leaf
• Caterpillar feeding and growing
• Chrysalis stage where transformation occurs
• Adult butterfly emerging
The caterpillar stage lasts roughly 10 to 14 days. During this short time caterpillars grow rapidly while feeding on milkweed leaves. After reaching full size, the caterpillar forms a chrysalis and undergoes metamorphosis. Within about ten days an adult butterfly emerges. Without milkweed plants growing across the landscape, monarch butterflies cannot reproduce successfully.
Planting Milkweed in Our Gardens
Planting milkweed remains one of the most effective ways we can support monarch populations. Native milkweed species grow well in many regions of North America and provide both habitat and nectar for pollinators. Several milkweed species grow especially well in prairie and Midwest gardens:
Each of these species supports monarch caterpillars while also producing nectar that attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Milkweed grows best in sunny areas and often thrives in prairie conditions once established. Many milkweed species require a period of winter cold before their seeds germinate, which means patience often pays off when planting them.
A diverse pollinator garden ensures monarch butterflies can find nectar during migration as well as milkweed plants for reproduction. In my garden, milkweed grows alongside other prairie flowers that provide nectar throughout the season. Monarchs and many other pollinators rely on these blooms as they move through the landscape. Common companion plants include:

Supporting Monarch Populations
Monarch butterfly populations have declined during the past several decades. Habitat loss, pesticide exposure, and changes in land use have reduced many of the milkweed populations monarchs once relied on. Large areas of prairie across the Midwest historically contained abundant milkweed plants. As farmland expanded and herbicide use increased, many of these plants disappeared from the landscape.
Conservation efforts now focus on restoring milkweed and nectar plants across monarch migration routes.There are several ways we can help support monarch populations:
• planting native milkweed species
• creating pollinator gardens with diverse nectar plants
• avoiding pesticide use in our gardens
• supporting prairie restoration projects
• leaving portions of habitat undisturbed
My garden serves as one small example of how these efforts help. Milkweed growing there provides habitat for monarch caterpillars each summer, while surrounding prairie flowers provide nectar for adult butterflies. Watching monarchs drift across my garden during migration offers a powerful reminder of how connected ecosystems remain across thousands of miles.
